Ethernet vs WiFi: when to use a wired connection

WiFi is convenient, but Ethernet wins on speed, latency, and reliability. Here is when each makes sense.

Ethernet consistently delivers higher speeds, lower latency, and zero packet loss compared to WiFi. A Cat6 Ethernet cable supports up to 10 Gbps over short distances and introduces less than 1 ms of latency. Even the best WiFi 6E connection cannot match Ethernet's combination of speed, stability, and reliability.

WiFi's speed is affected by distance, obstacles, interference, and the number of connected devices. A WiFi 6 router may advertise 2,400 Mbps on the 5 GHz band, but real-world speeds typically max out at 600 to 800 Mbps under ideal conditions — and drop significantly with distance or walls between the device and router.

For latency-sensitive applications — competitive gaming, real-time trading, remote desktop work, and professional video production — Ethernet is the clear choice. WiFi adds 2 to 10 ms of baseline latency and introduces jitter that wired connections do not. In competitive gaming, this difference translates directly into faster reaction times and smoother gameplay.

When WiFi is the right choice

WiFi is essential for mobile devices (phones, tablets), wearables, and smart home equipment. These devices lack Ethernet ports and depend entirely on wireless connectivity. For casual browsing, social media, music streaming, and basic video calls on these devices, WiFi provides more than adequate performance.

Laptops used in multiple locations around the home benefit from WiFi's flexibility. If you move between a desk, couch, and kitchen regularly, the convenience of wireless outweighs the marginal performance gain of Ethernet. Modern WiFi 6 provides smooth HD streaming and video calls throughout a well-configured home.

Smart home ecosystems (speakers, light bulbs, thermostats, plugs) operate on very low bandwidth and do not benefit from wired connections. These devices are designed for WiFi and typically use the 2.4 GHz band for its better range through walls.

When to use Ethernet

Desktop computers, gaming consoles, smart TVs, and streaming boxes should be wired whenever physically possible. These devices sit in fixed positions and benefit significantly from the consistent, high-speed, low-latency connection that Ethernet provides. The improvement is especially noticeable for 4K streaming, large downloads, and online gaming.

Home office setups for remote work should prioritise Ethernet. Video conferencing quality improves dramatically on wired connections because both latency and jitter decrease. If running Ethernet cable to your desk is impractical, consider a powerline Ethernet adapter or MoCA adapter that uses your home's existing electrical or coaxial wiring to create a wired connection.

Network-attached storage (NAS), home servers, and devices that transfer large files should always use Ethernet. Transferring a 50 GB video file takes minutes over Gigabit Ethernet but can take over an hour over WiFi due to wireless overhead and speed fluctuations.
