Speed brackets by real-world activity
Internet service providers market their plans in megabits per second, but the number on the box rarely tells you whether it is enough for what you actually do online. A 50 Mbps connection is perfectly adequate for a single person who browses, streams in 1080p, and takes occasional video calls. Once you add a second simultaneous 4K stream or a large cloud backup, however, that same 50 Mbps starts showing strain.
For most households with two to four people, 100 to 200 Mbps of download speed provides a comfortable buffer. This range handles multiple HD streams, several video calls, casual gaming, and routine background updates without noticeable slowdown. If everyone in the house streams in 4K simultaneously or if you regularly download large game files, stepping up to 300 to 500 Mbps eliminates buffering almost entirely.
Gigabit plans (1,000 Mbps) are increasingly available but rarely necessary for typical households. Their biggest advantage is not raw speed but headroom: even during peak evening congestion, a gigabit line rarely drops below 300 Mbps, which keeps the household running smoothly. The premium price is worth it mainly for homes with many connected devices, frequent large file transfers, or professional content creation.
Per-activity bandwidth requirements
Streaming services publish minimum speed requirements, but real-world usage is always higher. Netflix officially recommends 5 Mbps for HD and 15 Mbps for 4K, but these numbers assume zero other network activity. In practice, adding 50 percent overhead gives you a buffer for background updates, smart home devices, and momentary WiFi dips. A household streaming two 4K screens should aim for at least 50 Mbps of available download capacity.
Video conferencing has different demands. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet each need roughly 3 to 5 Mbps of both download and upload bandwidth per active participant. Unlike streaming, where buffering can absorb brief speed drops, video calls are real-time — any sudden drop causes frozen frames or robotic audio. The upload component is often the limiting factor, especially on cable connections with asymmetric speeds.
Online gaming consumes surprisingly little bandwidth. Most competitive multiplayer games use only 1 to 3 Mbps. However, gaming is extremely sensitive to latency, jitter, and packet loss. A stable 30 Mbps fibre connection will outperform a congested 500 Mbps cable line for gaming every time. When evaluating speed for gaming, prioritise stability metrics over raw download numbers.
How to test whether your speed is actually good
A single speed test result tells you very little. Network conditions fluctuate throughout the day based on neighbourhood congestion, WiFi interference, and background device activity. To get a meaningful picture, run tests at three different times: morning, afternoon, and evening. The evening test (typically between 7pm and 10pm) reveals peak-hour performance, which is usually the lowest.
Test over both WiFi and Ethernet. An Ethernet test shows the raw speed your provider delivers to your home, while a WiFi test shows what your devices actually experience. If the Ethernet result matches your plan but WiFi is significantly slower, the bottleneck is your local wireless setup, not your provider.
Finally, compare your sustained speed against your plan's advertised speed. Most providers deliver 80 to 90 percent of the advertised rate under normal conditions. If your wired speed consistently falls below 70 percent of your plan, contact your provider — the issue is likely on their side, such as a degraded line or an overloaded local node.
