Fibre, cable and 5G compared

Fibre Optic Internet

Fiber optic internet represents the most advanced and reliable connection type available today. It transmits data as pulses of light through thin strands of flexible glass. Because light travels efficiently through glass and is immune to electromagnetic interference, fiber connections deliver extremely high speeds over long distances without signal degradation.

A major benefit of fiber is symmetrical speed, meaning your upload speed is identical to your download speed. If you have a 300 Mbps plan, you get 300 Mbps in both directions. This is ideal for uploading large files, video conferencing, and backing up data to the cloud. Fiber also offers the lowest latency, typically under 10 ms.

The main disadvantage of fiber is its limited availability. Installing fiber requires providers to dig trenches and lay physical glass lines directly to buildings, which is costly and slow. If fiber is available in your neighborhood, it is always the recommended option due to its speed, latency, and resistance to peak-hour slowdowns.

Coaxial Cable Internet

Cable internet operates over the same coaxial copper lines that deliver cable television. It is the most widely available high-speed internet option. Cable can deliver fast download speeds, often reaching up to 1,000 Mbps, making it fully capable of handling 4K streaming and large downloads in most homes.

However, cable speeds are asymmetrical, meaning upload speeds are much lower than download speeds. A plan with 500 Mbps download might only offer 20 Mbps upload, which can create a bottleneck during heavy video calling or cloud usage. Additionally, cable is a shared medium, meaning your local bandwidth is shared with your immediate neighbors.

During peak evening hours (typically 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM), you may notice a significant drop in speed and an increase in latency as more households in your area join the network. Despite this, cable remains a reliable option if fiber is not yet installed in your area.

5G Fixed Wireless

5G fixed wireless is a modern alternative that delivers internet to your home using cellular networks. The provider installs an antenna or receiver in your home, which communicates wirelessly with a nearby cell tower. This eliminates the need for physical copper or glass lines running into your property, making it quick and easy to set up.

While 5G fixed wireless can deliver impressive speeds, its performance is highly dependent on environmental variables. Physical obstacles like trees, buildings, and hills can degrade the wireless signal. Weather conditions like heavy rain or foliage growth can also affect speed and latency, and cell tower congestion during busy periods can cause performance fluctuations.

Latency on 5G is higher and more variable than on fiber or cable, typically ranging from 30 ms to 60 ms with higher jitter. This makes it less ideal for competitive gaming, but it is an excellent and affordable option for general browsing, streaming, and areas where wired broadband options are slow or unavailable.
