Understanding your ISP's speed tiers

What the numbers on your bill actually mean, why real speeds differ, and how to tell if you are on the right tier.

What speed tiers actually promise

When an ISP advertises a plan as '300 Mbps', this number represents the maximum download speed the plan is provisioned to deliver. It is not a guarantee of sustained speed at all times. Most providers use language like 'up to' or 'maximum' to indicate that real-world performance will vary based on network conditions, time of day, and the number of users on the local network segment.

Upload speed is typically listed separately and is almost always much lower than the download speed on cable plans. A plan advertised as '500/20 Mbps' provides up to 500 Mbps download but only 20 Mbps upload. For households that rely on video calls, cloud backups, or content creation, the upload tier is often more important than the download headline.

Fibre plans often offer symmetric tiers (same upload and download speed), which is a significant advantage for modern usage patterns. A fibre plan advertised as '300/300 Mbps' provides equal speed in both directions, making it far superior for video conferencing and cloud-dependent workflows compared to a cable plan with 500 Mbps download but only 20 Mbps upload.

Why your actual speed differs from the advertised tier

Multiple factors reduce your real-world speed below the advertised maximum. Network protocol overhead consumes roughly 5 to 10 percent of your bandwidth for TCP/IP headers, error correction, and routing information. This is unavoidable and means a 100 Mbps plan will typically deliver 90 to 95 Mbps at best, even under ideal conditions.

WiFi adds another layer of speed reduction. Wireless protocols have their own overhead, and signal degradation from distance, walls, and interference further reduces throughput. A typical home WiFi setup delivers 60 to 80 percent of the wired connection speed. This is why speed tests over WiFi almost always show lower numbers than the advertised plan speed.

Network congestion during peak hours (typically 7pm to 11pm) reduces available bandwidth, especially on cable networks where subscribers share local infrastructure. Providers dimension their networks based on the statistical assumption that not all subscribers will be active simultaneously. When that assumption breaks down during heavy usage periods, individual speeds decrease.

How to tell if you are on the right tier

Run speed tests at three different times of day over a wired Ethernet connection. If your sustained speed consistently reaches 80 to 95 percent of your plan's advertised speed, your ISP is delivering the service correctly. If speeds consistently fall below 70 percent of the advertised rate, contact your provider to investigate.

Compare your tier against your household's calculated bandwidth needs. If your simultaneous usage rarely exceeds 50 Mbps but you are paying for a 500 Mbps plan, you are overspending. Conversely, if you experience buffering, lag, or degraded video call quality during peak hours, your current tier may be insufficient.

Consider switching providers or connection types before upgrading to a higher tier with the same provider. A 200 Mbps fibre plan from a less congested provider will outperform a 500 Mbps cable plan from an overloaded provider during peak hours. Real-world consistency matters more than the maximum number on the plan.
