Audit your household's actual usage
Before comparing plans, document what your household actually does online during a typical evening. Count the number of devices that are actively streaming, gaming, video calling, or downloading at the same time. This simultaneous usage count is far more important than individual activity speeds.
Common activities and their approximate bandwidth consumption: HD streaming uses 5 Mbps per stream, 4K streaming uses 25 Mbps, video calls use 5 Mbps (both download and upload), online gaming uses 3 Mbps, and browsing and social media use about 2 Mbps per active user. Smart home devices (cameras, doorbells, speakers) collectively use 5 to 15 Mbps depending on how many stream video.
Add up the simultaneous requirements and multiply by 1.5 to account for overhead and fluctuations. A household with two 4K streams, one video call, and three people browsing needs roughly 87 Mbps, which rounds up to a 100 Mbps plan. This simple calculation prevents both overspending on unnecessary speed and underspending on a plan that will struggle.
Factors beyond download speed
Upload speed is often overlooked but critically important for remote workers, content creators, and households that rely on cloud backups. Cable plans typically offer upload speeds that are 10 to 20 percent of the download speed. If your household regularly participates in video calls or uploads large files, prioritise plans with higher upload tiers or choose a fibre plan with symmetric speeds.
Data caps can be a hidden cost. Some ISPs impose monthly data limits (typically 1 TB) and charge overage fees or throttle speeds after the cap is reached. A household streaming 4K for four hours daily consumes roughly 400 GB per month on streaming alone. Add gaming downloads, cloud backups, and software updates, and 1 TB is easily reached. Look for plans with unlimited data or very high caps.
Contract terms and pricing transparency matter. Many ISPs advertise promotional rates that increase significantly after 12 months. Read the contract carefully, understand the full-price rate, and check whether month-to-month options are available. The cheapest plan in month one may be the most expensive plan in month thirteen.
Choosing between fibre, cable, and fixed wireless
If fibre optic internet is available at your address, choose it. Fibre offers the lowest latency, most consistent speeds, symmetric upload and download, and the least susceptibility to peak-hour congestion. The upfront cost may be slightly higher, but the reliability and performance advantages make it the best value for most households.
Cable internet is the most widely available high-speed option and handles most household needs well. Its main weakness is asymmetric speeds (low upload relative to download) and susceptibility to evening congestion in densely populated neighbourhoods. If fibre is not available, a cable plan with at least 200 Mbps download provides a good experience for most families.
Fixed wireless (5G and 4G LTE home internet) is an excellent option in areas where wired broadband is slow or unavailable. Setup is quick and contract terms are often more flexible. However, speeds and latency can vary based on weather, distance from the tower, and the number of other users on the same cell. Test the service during peak hours before committing long-term.
