Why your internet is slow at night

Peak-hour congestion is the most common cause of evening slowdowns. Here is what happens and what you can do about it.

What causes peak-hour congestion

Between roughly 7pm and 11pm, most households are simultaneously online. Family members are streaming video, downloading game updates, joining video calls, and scrolling social media. This concentrated burst of demand hits the shared infrastructure that connects your neighbourhood to the internet backbone.

Cable internet (coaxial) is the most affected connection type. Cable networks share bandwidth among all subscribers connected to the same local node, which typically serves 200 to 500 homes. When a large percentage of those homes are active at the same time, the available bandwidth per household drops. This is why your speed test might show 400 Mbps at 2pm but only 180 Mbps at 9pm.

Fibre optic connections are significantly less affected by peak-hour congestion because fibre networks have far greater capacity and are less commonly oversubscribed. If you consistently experience severe evening slowdowns and fibre is available in your area, switching to a fibre plan is the most effective long-term solution.

Diagnosing night-time slowdowns

First, establish whether the slowdown is caused by your provider's network or your local WiFi. Run a speed test over a wired Ethernet connection at night. If the wired speed is significantly slower than daytime measurements, the congestion is on your provider's side. If the wired speed matches daytime results but WiFi is slow, your local network is the bottleneck.

The most common local cause of evening WiFi slowdowns is channel congestion from neighbouring networks. As more people come home and turn on their routers, the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels in your area become crowded. Use a WiFi analyser app to check which channels are most congested and switch your router to a less populated channel.

Within your own home, evening usage patterns also matter. If someone starts a large download or backup while others are streaming, the router's buffer fills up, causing latency spikes for everyone else. Enabling Quality of Service (QoS) settings on your router can prioritise streaming and video call traffic over bulk downloads, keeping the experience smooth for all users.

Practical solutions for evening congestion

Schedule large downloads and backups for off-peak hours. Most routers, game consoles, and operating systems allow you to schedule updates for late night or early morning. Moving a 50 GB game update from 8pm to 3am frees up bandwidth for the rest of your evening activities.

If your router supports Smart Queue Management (SQM) or similar traffic shaping, enable it. SQM prevents any single device or download from monopolising your connection. It introduces a tiny amount of managed latency in exchange for dramatically smoother performance across all devices, especially during congestion.

Consider upgrading to a higher speed tier if your current plan consistently underperforms during evenings. Many providers offer mid-tier plans that provide enough headroom to remain comfortable even during peak congestion. The goal is not to get the fastest plan available but to have enough spare capacity that evening demand does not drag your usable speed below your household's needs.
