Start with a wired baseline
Before adjusting router settings or buying new equipment, you must isolate the root cause of the slowdown. The most reliable way to do this is by establishing a wired baseline speed. Connect a computer directly to your modem or gateway using a high-quality Ethernet cable, disable your device's Wi-Fi, and run a speed test. The result you get represents the raw speed delivered to your home by your provider.
If this direct wired speed matches your subscription plan, your ISP is delivering the service correctly, and your performance issues are caused by your local Wi-Fi setup or local hardware. However, if the wired speed is significantly below what you pay for, the bottleneck is external. In this case, you should contact your provider to check the line incoming to your house before trying to optimize your local Wi-Fi.
Establishing this baseline prevents you from wasting time on local network tweaks that cannot fix a slow provider line. It gives you a clear boundary: either you need to optimize your wireless environment, or your provider needs to dispatch a technician to repair a physical connection outside your home.
Fix your channel and band
Most modern routers broadcast on two frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band has a longer range and passes through walls easily, but it is slow and highly crowded. The 5 GHz band offers much faster speeds and has less interference, but it has a shorter range and struggles to penetrate solid barriers. Ensure your high-demand devices (like work laptops, smart TVs, and consoles) are connected to the 5 GHz band.
Routers automatically select a broadcast channel when they start up, but they often choose congested channels, especially in dense apartment buildings. For the 2.4 GHz band, only channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap with each other. If your router broadcasts on a channel like 3 or 8, it will suffer constant interference from neighboring networks. You can log into your router settings to manually assign a clean channel.
For the 5 GHz band, select a channel width of 80 MHz or 160 MHz in your router wireless configuration. This widens the data pipe, allowing compatible devices to transfer data much faster. If you experience dropouts, you can use a free Wi-Fi analyzer app to scan your area, identify which channels your neighbors are using, and select the least congested frequency.
Placement beats hardware
Many users assume that buying a more expensive router is the only way to fix dead zones. In reality, router placement has a much larger impact on signal quality than hardware specifications. Radio waves travel outward and downward from the router antennas, and they are quickly absorbed or reflected by physical obstacles like concrete walls, brick chimneys, metal appliances, and large mirrors.
Position your router in a central, elevated location in your home, such as on a high shelf or mounted on a wall. Avoid placing it inside closed cabinets, behind TVs, or on the floor, as these locations block the signal immediately. Additionally, keep the router away from electronic devices that emit electromagnetic noise, such as microwave ovens, baby monitors, and cordless phones.
If your home has multiple stories or a layout that blocks wireless signals, consider upgrading to a mesh Wi-Fi system instead of a single router. Mesh systems use multiple nodes placed around the house to create a single, continuous wireless network. This ensures you maintain a strong signal and fast speed as you move from room to room.
