Understanding WiFi generations
WiFi standards are updated by the IEEE under the 802.11 family. WiFi 6 (802.11ax) was finalised in 2020 and introduced several improvements over WiFi 5 (802.11ac), including OFDMA for better multi-device handling, target wake time for improved battery life on mobile devices, and BSS colouring to reduce interference in dense environments like apartment buildings.
WiFi 6E extended the same technology into the 6 GHz frequency band, effectively tripling the available wireless spectrum. This additional spectrum provides wider channels (160 MHz) with far less congestion, because only WiFi 6E and newer devices can access this band. The result is faster, more reliable connections for devices that support it, while legacy devices continue using the crowded 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.
WiFi 7 (802.11be) is the latest standard, finalised in early 2024. Its headline feature is Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which allows a single device to simultaneously transmit across multiple frequency bands (2.4, 5, and 6 GHz). This dramatically improves both peak throughput and reliability, because if one band becomes congested, traffic instantly shifts to another without any interruption.
What actually matters at home
For most home users, the jump from WiFi 5 to WiFi 6 delivers the most noticeable improvement. WiFi 6 handles multiple devices far more efficiently, which matters when a dozen phones, tablets, smart home gadgets, and laptops are all connected simultaneously. If your current router is WiFi 5 or older, upgrading to WiFi 6 will produce a meaningful, perceptible improvement in daily browsing, streaming, and video call quality.
The jump from WiFi 6 to WiFi 6E or 7 is less dramatic for typical households. WiFi 6E shines in congested environments like apartment buildings where the 5 GHz band is saturated with neighbouring networks. If you live in a detached house with minimal interference, WiFi 6 on the 5 GHz band already performs excellently. WiFi 7's MLO is most beneficial for latency-sensitive applications like VR gaming and real-time collaboration.
The single most important factor is not the WiFi generation but whether your devices support the same standard. A WiFi 7 router connected to WiFi 5 devices will still operate at WiFi 5 speeds. Before upgrading your router, check what standard your most-used devices support. If your laptop, phone, and streaming box all support WiFi 6, a WiFi 6 router maximises your investment.
Practical buying guidance
If your router is more than four years old, replace it. An older WiFi 5 router with 100 Mbps Ethernet ports will bottleneck any modern broadband plan above 100 Mbps. A mid-range WiFi 6 router with gigabit Ethernet ports is the sweet spot for most households in 2026, offering strong performance without the premium price of WiFi 7.
Consider a mesh WiFi system if your home has dead zones or is larger than 150 square metres. Modern mesh systems from brands like TP-Link, Asus, and Google Nest use multiple access points to blanket your home in a single, seamless network. WiFi 6 mesh kits offer excellent price-to-performance for most homes.
WiFi 7 routers are worth the investment only if you have specific high-demand use cases: professional-grade video editing over the network, VR gaming, or multiple users simultaneously streaming and uploading in 4K. For general browsing, streaming, and video calls, WiFi 6 remains more than sufficient in 2026.
