Minimum speed requirements by platform
Each video conferencing platform publishes official bandwidth requirements, but real-world usage demands more. Zoom recommends 3.8 Mbps download and 3.0 Mbps upload for a single 1080p HD video call. Microsoft Teams requires 4.0 Mbps download and 3.0 Mbps upload for HD video. Google Meet recommends 3.2 Mbps download and 3.2 Mbps upload for 720p HD video.
These are absolute minimums for a single participant with no other network activity. In practice, you should have at least double the stated requirements to maintain stable quality. Background processes, system updates, other connected devices, and WiFi signal fluctuations all consume bandwidth. A buffer of 100 percent ensures the video call maintains quality even when other devices are active.
Group calls require significantly more bandwidth than one-on-one calls. A Zoom meeting with gallery view showing 25 participants needs 4.0 Mbps download. Teams group calls with HD video require up to 6.5 Mbps download. If you frequently host or participate in large meetings, plan for at least 10 Mbps of dedicated download bandwidth for the call alone.
Why latency matters more than speed for calls
Video calls are real-time, bidirectional communication. Unlike streaming, where content can be buffered seconds in advance, every frame and audio sample in a video call must arrive in real time. This makes latency (ping) and jitter far more important than raw download speed for call quality.
If your latency exceeds 150 milliseconds, conversations become awkward. Participants talk over each other because of the transmission delay. Above 250 ms, the call feels like a satellite phone conversation with painful pauses. All three platforms start degrading video quality and may switch to audio-only mode when latency consistently exceeds 200 ms.
Jitter is equally critical. If your ping fluctuates between 20 ms and 180 ms, the video application cannot maintain a smooth frame rate. You will see frozen faces, hear audio that cuts in and out, and experience screen sharing that updates in jarring jumps rather than smooth transitions. A stable 80 ms connection outperforms a connection that averages 40 ms but regularly spikes to 200 ms.
How to optimise your connection for video calls
Use a wired Ethernet connection whenever possible. Plugging your laptop directly into the router eliminates WiFi variables and provides the most stable, lowest-latency connection available. A simple USB-C to Ethernet adapter costs very little and dramatically improves call quality for remote workers.
Close bandwidth-heavy applications before joining a call. Pause cloud sync services (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive), close streaming tabs, and temporarily disable automatic software updates. Each of these services can consume 5 to 20 Mbps of upload bandwidth, directly competing with your video call.
Enable Quality of Service (QoS) on your router if multiple people share your network. QoS settings allow you to prioritise video conferencing traffic over file downloads and streaming. This ensures your call maintains low latency even when someone else in the household starts a large download.
