Build a bandwidth budget
Internet Service Providers often encourage customers to purchase the fastest available plan, promising that more speed solves every network issue. In reality, most households do not need expensive gigabit connections. To find the right speed for your home, you can build a bandwidth budget by adding up the requirements of your active devices and daily habits.
Different online activities consume different amounts of data. A single standard definition stream uses about 3 Mbps, while High Definition (1080p) streaming requires 5 Mbps. Streaming in 4K Ultra HD is the most demanding common activity, consuming about 15 to 25 Mbps. Voice and video calls are lighter, requiring only 3 to 5 Mbps per active stream.
Multiply these requirements by the number of people who will be active online at the same time. If two people stream 4K video while a third is on a video conference, your baseline requirement is roughly 50 Mbps. Adding a 50% safety buffer for background updates and smart devices brings the recommended plan speed to 75 Mbps.
Do not forget upload speed
Many users only focus on download speed when choosing an internet plan, but upload speed is equally important for modern home networks. Upload speed determines how fast your device can send data to the internet. If your upload speed is insufficient, actions like sending emails, backing up files, and joining video calls will lag.
Video conferencing tools like Zoom, Teams, and FaceTime require at least 3 Mbps of upload speed per active stream to maintain high definition video and clear audio. If you regularly upload large files to cloud services like Google Drive or Dropbox, or if you stream gameplay to platforms like Twitch, you will need a plan with at least 15 to 20 Mbps of upload capacity.
A congested upload channel will slow down your entire network, including downloads. This is because your computer must send small confirmation packets to the server for every file it downloads. If the upload path is full, these confirmations are delayed, slowing down your download rate. Ensuring a sufficient upload buffer is key to a smooth network.
